23 Mai VATM welcomes swift legislative initiative by the new federal government to recognize the major public interest
Cologne, 23.05.2025. “It sends a strong message to the industry that the new German government plans to make public interest a top priority in its initial digital policy actions for expanding telecommunications networks,” said VATM Managing Director Dr Frederic Ufer, welcoming Thomas Jarzombek’s announcement at today’s Bundesrat meeting. Jarzombek is Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernisation.
A change to the Telecommunications Act is set to be introduced in the Bundestag before the summer break. This should give a strong push to the deployment of mobile networks and fibre optic networks. “The right framework conditions are essential for the digitalisation of Germany. We must take full advantage of every chance to speed up progress in all areas,” says Ufer. The fact that the federal government is acting swiftly is a decisive step.
“Closing the remaining gaps in the mobile network is a top priority for the industry,” says Dr Frederic Ufer in connection with Mobile Communication Week. Germany already has strong 5G coverage, and according to the VATM’s 2025 telecommunications market analysis, presented a few weeks ago, more than 99% of all households are expected to have 5G access by the end of this year, with 95% of the country’s territory also covered. Mobile network operators are continuing to invest heavily in connecting antenna sites with fibre-optic cables.
“The key factors are the framework conditions that can speed up and simplify expansion,” says the managing director. “There is still plenty of room for improvement and opportunities for the new federal government to make a difference.”
