16 Mai Digital policy under one roof: VATM calls for bold steps towards faster digitalisation in Germany
Berlin, 09.04.2025. VATM welcomes the decision by the CDU/CSU and SPD to consolidate digital policy into a dedicated ministry in the upcoming legislative period. „Over the next few years, many key decisions will need to be made – for the future of Germany’s economy, for better digital public services, and for the country to catch up with international digital standards,“ says VATM Managing Director Dr. Frederic Ufer.
He explains that Germany still faces major challenges in building high-performance network infrastructure and moving beyond outdated copper networks. The same applies to digital transformation in local administrations. „Progress is far too slow. We need strong political will to ensure consistent, standardised digital services across municipalities,“ he adds.
For too long, digital policy in Germany has focused too much on strategy papers and too little on action. Now is the time for bold decisions – with trust in market competition and a stronger role for the Federal Network Agency to ensure fair conditions. „Digital policy must move beyond managing processes. Without real progress, Germany risks falling behind,“ warns Ufer.
Creating an attractive environment for investors is also crucial. Another step in the right direction is ending the national supply chain law, with its heavy reporting and documentation burden, as outlined in the coalition agreement.
„Digitalisation is one of the biggest drivers of growth for Germany’s economy. Bringing digital policy together under one ministry is a long-overdue move. Whoever takes on this role will have a major responsibility. As an industry association, we look forward to constructive collaboration in the country’s best interest,“ says Ufer.
