10 Mrz ECTA PR: European Parliament beats the drum of competition in the interest of end-users
Brussels, 10 March 2016: In a resolution focused on the way towards a thriving data-driven economy, the European Parliament once again advocates in favour of competition.
In this report, the European Parliament stresses the importance of Big Data as an integral part of a new digital market and recalls the urgency to seize the opportunity of this ultra-fast growing market to ensure the development of innovative and competitive business models. Moreover, in order to fully exploit the potential of this new future, connectivity will be essential and will only be provided through the right network infrastructures.
The European Parliament particularly highlights in this report the necessity to ensure a regulatory environment that “encourages the creation of start-ups and entry to the market by new operators, creating a level playing field and fair competition while avoiding excessive regulatory burden”. The European Parliament also made clear in this report that “a level-playing field should be the place where all operators, small and large, are enabled to invest, innovate and compete for the benefits of European end-users in terms of choice and affordability”.
The need to preserve efficient competition to unlock investments by all players as well as the recognition that the benefits of the digital era for end-users will only be realised if prices are affordable, had become a recurrent leitmotiv for the European Parliament as this is the 4th time it highlights effective competition and affordability as political priorities.
While the European Commission is currently preparing the review of the regulatory framework for electronic communications, this position is again a very strong signal from the European Parliament that Europe needs a vibrant and competitive telecom market in order to turn the ambitions of the Digital Single Market Strategy into reality.
